DO I NEED TO HAVE SURGERY FOR MY DISC HERNIATION?

Did you know that massive spinal disc herniation's can be managed conservatively without surgery?  A recent study published in the prestigious Spine Journal followed 17 cases of massive disc herniation treated with conservative care.  After 9 months, only one patient underwent surgery (without complications). All other patients were safely managed without surgery and without complications.

Current research supports a trial of at least 3 months of conservative treatment for disc herniations of all shapes and sizes before surgery is considered. Occasionally surgical intervention is necessary when pain is severe and unresponsive to therapy, or when there is a risk of serious nerve damage (Cauda equina syndrome).
